Last Quarter Moon in Aquarius: Groundbreaker

In about 8 hours, we enter the Last Quarter phase, the time when we’re meant to DO something about the goals, skill building, and illuminations of this lunar cycle.

There are two major aspect patterns in this Last Quarter chart. Both involve the Moon at the beginning of Aquarius conjunction Pluto. Expect seismic action at great depth.

Each Last Quarter begins when the waning Moon squares the Sun.

This is notable in itself, since yesterday, the Sun entered Taurus. After the headlong fire of Aries, this Sun slows way down. Whatever the Sun in Aries claimed is now going to be planted. This Sun is like, ok, I got this stuff here. What do I do with it? How do I keep hold of it?

Whether the plan is planting or building, this Sun is breaking new ground.

We’re not in a simple Sun–Moon square though. In an exact square to the Sun, a waxing square, we find Mars, newly arrived in Leo. After way too much time in Cancer, this Mars says, Rawr.

Imagine this Mars climbing out of ground the new Taurus Sun has prepared. He’s thrilled to be in the Sun’s sign, where he can channel the Fire he loves.

Mars in Leo strides forth. He looks around for the highest place. He climbs up, turns to address the crowd below. He commands attention.

Does he have something wonderful or important to say? Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows? This Mars doesn’t care much about content. But, by the gods, he will speak. He will be seen.

So we have a T-square with the Sun at the corner. Across from Mars we see the Moon––and Pluto. The third and final Mars–Pluto opposition will not be exact until April 26, yet we are definitely feeling it right now.

The Mars–Pluto opposition is integral to the long Mars retrograde through late Cancer and early Leo.

The first opposition occurred November 3, 2024, in the final, anaretic degrees of Cancer (Mars) and Capricorn (Pluto). It felt like a last touch before Pluto definitively entered Aquarius November 19, and Mars stationed retrograde December 6.

The second was January 3, 2025 at 01º Leo and Aquarius with Mars retrograde.

Mars–Pluto aspects are volatile, signaling power struggles and contests of will. We can see Mars as a David coming up against a Plutonian Goliath. Yet Pluto is so deep, so chthonic, so implacable, Mars can act more like a match lighting a fuse.

Oppositions are challenges that create visibility. Remember, Full Moons are oppositions. Two bodies face each other, eye to eye.

There are more than enough world events we can link to Mars–Pluto over these last months. More can be expected in the next week(s).

The question for each of us, though, is how is this showing up in our lives?

The Sun and Moon, at this Last Quarter, clearly focus our attention on the Mars–Pluto polarity. Where do early Taurus, Leo, and Aquarius fall in your chart? (Yes, do check early Scorpio as well. If something in your chart turns the T-square into a Grand Cross, that’s significant.)

Where am I breaking new ground? Where am I wanting to step into the spotlight and have my chance to shine?

Early Aquarius, where we find the Moon and Pluto, offers an enigmatic ending to this tale. This is the place of exile, either forced or chosen.

When immigration is a flashpoint politically, when people are mistreated for being the “wrong” kind of person in the “wrong” place, when others consider whether they need to leave home to find a safer place, the opening of Aquarius takes on a whole complex set of meanings.

What are we done with? What is done with us? If we are moving on, what do we leave behind and what are we hoping to discover?

Some of the answers may be in the Kite aspect pattern also in this Last Quarter chart.

The Nodes of the Moon are always opposite and currently sit at 26º50’ of Virgo and Pisces. The Pisces North Node is conjunct Saturn and Venus. This is the central rib of our kite, which we might describe as a pull to let go of mundane details and anxieties to embrace an emerging, complex, beautiful, cosmic vision.

On one side of this opposition, we see Uranus in late Taurus, trining the South Node and sextiling the North and Saturn and Venus. Uranus the Promethean agent of complete, shocking change supports this idea of letting go of the ordinary to dive into the universal.

On the other side, we have––wait, who’s this?––the Moon and Pluto, forming an out-of-sign trine to the South Node and sextile to the North, Saturn, and Venus. The Moon’s wide orb of influence reaches out to complete this pattern.

The Moon–Pluto conjunction anchors both the challenge of the T-square and the invitation of the Kite.

The world we knew seems to be shifting, breaking apart, and reforming itself as we watch.

These global patterns influence us all. At the same time, many of us experience similar energies erupting in our personal live, as a direct consequence of world events, or as a kind of personal mirror or echo.

What ground is breaking under our feet? What do we know it’s time to let go of? What are we holding tight to, as vital sources of meaning and support going forward?

What vision are we ready to embrace?
